Minutes of the September Meeting


 The Winston County Natural Resources Council met on September 17, 2026.  Present were Riley Jacobs, Paul Green, Chris Horne, Emily Allison, Jamie Segraves, Matt Hannah, Mike Henshaw, John Creed, Ron Scalf, Casey Hammack, and Mark Finley. (photo by Amy Foss)

Jamie called the meeting to order and reviewed the August meeting minutes.  

Zach, Casey, and Jamie have conducted basic tests of the new Stream Hydrology Trailer, and found some modifications are needed.  They have also ordered some addition items that will be needed for it.  The discussed some training that will be needed for hydrology instructors.  For now, Jamie, Casey, and Zach will be training others to run the trailer.  They also discussed some maintenance and storage considerations to keep the trailer in good condition.

The FAWN program is set for October 14-15, at Houston Recreation Area.  The walk thru will be on Wednesday, October 13, at 9:00 am.  All of the stations are set.  T-shirts have been ordered.  

Emily Allison introduced herself to the council.  She is the Outreach Coordinator for Ag and Natural Resources with the NW RC&D Council.  

Jamie gave an overview of the latest grant with RC&D consisting of a firefighting skid for a Utility Vehicle and related transport trailer.  Jamie and Emily discussed the need to get some short video clips for the equipment being used.  These video clips will be edited into a short testimonial video about how the equipment benefits the community.

Mike mentioned emails from Maggie Johnston about her international travel, and another from Allison Cochran about FAWN and the Landowner Field Day activities.

October 9th, is the TREASURE Forest Banquet in Millbrook at the Alabama Wildlife Federation Headquarters.  Matt Hannah is a Helene Mosley TREASURE Forest Award Winner and will be recognized at the banquet.  Casey, Jamie, and Mark will also be attending.  Others are invited, they must register and cover the $30 registration fee.

Paul gave an update on the NRCS reorganization.  He said he currently working on CSP certifications.  The deadline for applications to 2027 programs is September 25.

Chris said Forest Service personnel from the Bankhead District have been in Oregon, but most have returned.

Jamie said they are working on year-end close outs, and checking on sites for potential prescribed burns.

Casey said the balance in the treasury was $9,289.94.  Ron moved that we approved the treasurer's report and Matt seconded.  Motion passed.

Matt moved the meeting be adjourned and Paul seconded.  Motion passed.
